Samuel A. DiPiazza, Jr. heads PricewaterhouseCoopers, the professional services firm created by a 1998 merger between Coopers & Lybrand and Price Waterhouse. His topic for the National Press Club is "Building Public Trust: The Future of Corporate Reporting."
DiPiazza rose through the ranks at Coopers & Lybrand, arriving in 1973 and becoming a partner in 1979. He ran the corporate offices in Birmingham, Ala., and in Chicago before being named Midwest regional managing partner in 1992. In 1994 he moved to a similar position in the New York metropolitan region and added the title of client service vice president. By 2000 he was elected chairman and senior partner.
His comments on corporate reporting come in the wake of shareholder skepticism following the Enron debacle and are informed by his current three-year term as a trustee of the Financial Accounting Foundation.
A graduate of the University of Alabama, where he earned a dual bachelor's degree in accounting and economics, DiPiazza also has a master's degree in tax accounting from the University of Houston.
He serves on the International Advisory Board of Junior Achievement, the Executive Council of the Inner City Scholarship Fund and in 2001 was elected president of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of New York City.
He's also active in the arts as a member of the board of the New York City Ballet and on the executive committee of the National Corporate Theatre Fund.
