Miami GEMS Film Festival to Open With Radical, Close With The Holdovers

Miami Dade College’s Miami Film Festival GEMS has announced the full lineup for its 2023 festival, which will run from Nov. 2-5. The 10th edition of the fest will feature 26 films from 14 countries, all taking place at MDC’s Koubek Center and Silverspot Cinema.

Mexican drama “Radical,” directed by Christopher Zalla, will open the fest and star Eugenio Derbez will receive GEMS’ Impact Award for his extraordinary contribution to the Latin American entertainment landscape, as well bringing attention to the advancement of educational equity for Latino students. After the screening, GEMS will host its annual Opening Night Celebration and celebrate Mexican culture with the Day of the Dead festivities.

“The Holdovers,” a comedy-drama by Alexander Payne, will close out the festival Nov. 5. The film stars Paul Giamatti as a cranky history teacher at a prep school who is forced to remain on campus over the holidays with a student whose family plans for the holidays have been cancelled unexpectedly.

The festival’s four centerpiece screenings are survivalist thriller “Society of the Snow,” animated feature “The Boy and the Heron,” Toronto Film Festival People’s Choice Award winner “American Fiction” and psychological thriller drama “Saltburn.”

Other notable screenings at GEMS 2023 are seven official submissions to for the international feature film Oscar: “Fallen Leaves” (Finland), “The Monk and the Gun” (Bhutan), “Perfect Days” (Japan), “The Promised Land” (Denmark), “The Taste of Things” (France), “The Teacher’s Lounge” (Germany) and “Totem” (Mexico).

To give festgoers a sneak peek at what they’ll experience, GEMS Preview Night takes place Oct. 10, featuring Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall.”

“This year’s GEMS is all about coming together to celebrate excellence in cinema. This lineup gives audiences not just cultural diversity, but a curated package of films that span the gamut of everything from star-studded crowd pleasers to prestige pictures from some of cinema’s most beloved auteurs. We’re so proud to have a lineup of films that will inspire audiences and reignite their love of cinema,” said director of programming Lauren Cohen.

“Now celebrating its 10th edition, GEMS has become a key stop on the road to awards season, and this year is no exception,” said James Woolley, who will serve as the new executive director of Miami Film Festival. “We’re looking forward to bringing the best films of the fall season to our audience, and to spending four full days in the theater together basking in the collective moviegoing experience.”
